Carbon Emissions Proposals

Should New Mexico be a pioneer in the fight against climate change? That question is at the heart of a debate over stricter emissions regulations in the state, including a controversial cap-and-trade program.

Ahead this week on NEW MEXICO IN FOCUS, weighing the pros and cons of the proposals, that will be decided soon by the state Environmental Improvement Board. Plus, on THE LINE, the panelists sound off on all the negativity in this year’s elections, the effect of early voting on the campaigns, and a potential lawsuit by Albuquerque Public Schools over state funding.

  1. Ralph Barker Says:

Considering the looming budget deficits, it seems obvious that New Mexico can’t afford to be a pioneer in terms of reducing carbon emissions. We can’t even afford to fund all of the social programs that have been put in place. We’ll have enough trouble trying to comply with federal mandates when they come about. Shooting ourselves in the (carbon) foot in the interim doesn’t make sense.

I don’t think we can afford not to be a pioneer of reducing carbon emissions. Reducing carbon emissions creates a market for innovation, green industry and technology and jobs. It is those jobs that will improve the economy of the state not sitting tight and hoping things will improve. The status quo did not protect jobs or the environment and it is time for forward thinking and vision.

NM has a prime opportunity to harvest what God has given us – solar, wind, & geothermal energies. I would suggest moving those on the entitlement programs into work in green energy production – the move from welfare to work would ultimately reduce entitlement and give those on entitlement programs the opportunity to become self sufficent members of our community.
