FLASHBACK: Thoughts on Health Care Reform

FLASHBACK: As The White House gets set to pass their Health Care Reform legislation, we thought it would be a good time to revisit our CITIZEN JOURNALIST PROJECT from the last election to hear their thoughts about this topic on the eve of the 2008 election.

Healthcare System And Small Business

A look at the impact of our current healthcare system on one small business.

I Don’t Feel Well

It is National Quality Healthcare Week! Yeah! I’m not sure what that means, but I can assure you, quality healthcare is on the minds of the candidates. Next to the economy Healthcare remains a hot topic. For my video blog, I chose to look at what are the REAL obstacles to a National Healthcare plan are. While both candidates have their ideas about how to make it work, it’s the people in the trenches of the industry that can tell what will work and what will not. Regardless of who ends up in the White House it will be you and I that need to make sure they deliver on a plan that is good for everybody! This issue is a slippery one because unless you are one of the people who relies on regular trips to the doctor or the drugstore you may not know what the real cost of healthcare. But for the old, young or chronically ill, it can be devastating! This is the time for us to make this happen. Not having to worry about a simple doctors visit, would have an enormous effect on everyone’s quality of life.

But you can bet in this climate the Insurance & Pharmaceutical Industries are not going to go quietly. They are the ones that stand to loose the most if we Nationalize what should be a human right.

Entitlement Health Contract & Hope

Filmmaker Ramona Emerson gives her perspective of the failure of 1952 Health Entitlement Contract made between Indian Health Services and the government. Dr. Gregory Cajete Director of Native American Studies of the University of New Mexico gives his perspectives of the election and his hope for the future.

Shock & Awe

It was one of the most shocking things for me to realize lately. And these days there seems to be plenty of shock and awe for everybody. The politicians love to give it lip service. The Troops! Support the Troops! Bring back the troops! Yet the reality of this situation far exceeds the rhetoric. If or when the conflict in Iraq ends, we still got a pretty serious battle to wage! The number of veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom will approach a million men and women. All of them will have scars and wounds. Unfortunately, an already overwhelmed VA, will likely buckle under the pressure of bringing them home. In my examination of the problem I discovered a group of veterans that continue to make sure none of their comrades are left behind. That doesnt mean pulling their wounded bodies off the battlefield, but instead picking up their shattered lives off the streets of Albuquerque. If you are a New Mexican veteran in need of assistance, or would like to donate please contact them at (505) 265 0512 or www.nmvic.org

Health Of The Nation

What I wanted to convey in this video was the perspectives of young adult Natives in New Mexico and their experiences with Indian Health Services on and off the reservation. And why reauthorization of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act is so important especially in this election. It calls to attention for both Natives and political leaders to take action.
