H1N1 Update & Cancer Screenings Controversy
Friday, December 11th, 2009This week show definitely is definitely focused on your health. FIrst, we started out with a great discussion about the spread of the H1N1 flu here in New Mexico. Our medical providers also talked a lot about the vaccine for H1N1 which has been somewhat controversial. The vaccine is still pretty slow in arriving here in New Mexico, but if you want the latest information about the shot, as well as the virus in general, the Health Department is the place to go.
We also ran across this article earlier in the week about some of the H1N1 vaccines being distributed this weekend here in Albuquerque. I’m not sure if there are still doses available or not, as it says you need to set up an appointment to get one.
We didn’t have time in the show for all of the Q&A on the H1N1 (and seasonal flu for that matter). But not to worry, you can watch what was left out right here!

In our other health segment this week, we focused on the new guidelines regarding mammograms and cervical cancer screenings. The recommendations are controversial for many, in part because some people fear this is just the beginning of a move away from preventive care. Watch the full show to find out what a UNM Professor has to say about all of that. Alan Waxman actually helped write some of the new guidelines surrounding cervical cancer screenings. He also talked to us about what other preventive tests may be scaled back next.

And lastly, Gene mentioned in the show the good news about New Mexico’s ties to the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. The animated series ONE SQUARE MILE OF EARTH will be part of the short film program next year. The animator of the project is the uber talented Jeff Drew, who also works his magic on a regular basis at the Weekly Alibi. He partnered with the Mark Chavez and Shenoah Allen, otherwise known as the Pajama Men on the project, which will take to the screen in Park City Utah next month. Congrats to them all!
