Episode 313: Islamaphobia and The Special Session

Islamaphobia.  It’s a word I had honestly not heard before this week.  That’s not to say that I am oblivious to the stereotypes and confusion that follow the Islamic Faith.  I just didn’t realize there was now a term for it.

As a Public Television Station, we feel part of our mission is first and foremost to educate and inform.  That’s why we wanted to undertake the topic of Islamaphobia on this week’s show.  It was fabulous to get a tour of the Islamic Center here in Albuquerque, and I encourage everyone to make it on out to the Open House on Saturday, October 17th from 2-6pm (More information available here).

It was also great to sit down with Cultural Anthroplogist Dr. Evelyn Early.  As usual, time made it impossible to air her entire interview on the show, but that’s not a problem here.  Just click play below to hear her entire interview with David Alire Garcia.

If you enjoyed our interview with Dr. Early, than you’ll probably be equally interested in the Albuquerque International Association’s next lecture.  It’s entitled “Political Islam: What is it and Does it Matter”? The event will be held October 30th from 3:30-5:00pm at the Albuquerque Museum. For more information, and to register, just follow the link: http://www.abqinternational.org/.

Next week on the show, we’ll recap the special session, and talk about the steps lawmakers choose to balance the budget.  And, a reminder, if you can’t make it up to Santa Fe, livestreaming coverage from both the House and Senate are available at http://legis.state.nm.us/lcs/.  Also ahead next week, a special segment on volunteerism in New Mexico.  We’re partnering with KRWG and KENW, the two other PBS stations in the state to bring you inspiring stories of New Mexicans making a difference.

See you then!
