Episode 233: Brackish Outlook?
This week’s show was all about the water! And with good reason. the recent discovery (or confirmation) of deepwater breackish aquifers on the west side of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho will no doubt have a lasting impact on the growth in this area moving forward. I know for me, it is comforting on one hand to know that we have this newfound source of “the drink of life”, but I also realize that we need to be very careful about how we handle this precious resource. In case you missed any of the show, watch it here:
I think David was right in his interview with State Engineer John D’Antonio when he asked about the price of water, and how that equates to how we as consumers value it. At some point we have to understand that water consumption has its price, and its worth much more than the equivalent of our monthly cell phone bill.
If you want to learn more about the brackish water issue, John Fleck at the Journal is definitely the go-to guy. His blog at the Journal is great, and so is his independent blog jfleckatinkstain. We appreciate him helping us shed some light on this important issue. He has already done a follow up blog entry about one of the topics we discussed (the relationship between water and managed growth) which is also well worth the read. Sean Olson has also done some reporting on this for the Journal. Give his stuff a read as well, if you have the time!
There are several important questions still to be answered out of all this, and moving forward:
- Will the proposed legislation pass this year in the Roundhouse?
- Even if it passes, will it stop a major water rush in our state?
- Who will win their claim to this precious resource, and how will they use it?
- Will we ever be put together a realistic water map in this state?
- How do we put together a growth strategy based on that water map?
