An Election of Importance

I am starting to wonder exactly what will happen after the election, and what makes this decision so critical. I would like to be a little clearer on why this election is so crucial. Or at least why it is so important to me.

If we look at the state of our country, we can see that there is a notable change, when compared to five years ago. It is not surprising to me that, according to a CBS poll, 81% of Americans say that they think the U.S. is on the wrong track This is the highest percentage of disapproval ever. We as people are starting to see that there is a problem.

Now it is time for us to look toward the future and determine what track we want the U.S. on.

It is clear to me that the state of our economy is the most important issue for us to address. The reason that this is so apparent is that nothing else can run smoothly in a capitalist nation without the smooth flow of money. This introduces our current financial crisis. The house passed the 700 billion dollar bailout bill on Friday. We need to understand that this is not the end of the problem. This was a huge decision that will change the state of our economy.

The next step is pulling ourselves out of this huge financial hole. The financial bail out will do the job of balancing out the current problems of large institutions. However, it opens up the door for what economists call a moral hazard, in which, institutions make risky decisions, with the idea that the government will be there to help when they get into trouble. This will set us up for future bailouts and more severe problems.

What is certain is that the current economic situation will be left for the next president to deal with. It will be his responsibility to sort out the mess we are in, and best use the budget to keep progress going. This will be extremely difficult and we need to listen carefully when the candidates address this.

Addressing the financial problems of this country will do a great deal in alleviating pressure in other areas.

The second debate will show where these candidates stand and how they plan on dealing with our economy. Then we can begin to focus on other issues that are important to us, but perhaps not as important as how we can afford to live? This is the biggest of our problems.

It is enough to make the careful choosing of a good candidate, a crucial decision.
